CLASS DESCRIPTION
Areas Covered:
1. Quantitative Problem Solving (45%)**: This section includes arithmetic concepts, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percentages. It tests the ability to solve problems in real-world contexts using these basic arithmetic operations.
2. Algebraic Problem Solving (55%)**: Focuses on algebraic expressions, equations, inequalities, graphs, and functions. It assesses the ability to work with variables, solve algebraic equations and inequalities, interpret graphs, and understand linear, quadratic, and exponential relationships.
Skills Tested:
Basic Math: Understanding fundamental arithmetic operations and their applications.
Geometry:Knowledge of shapes, volumes, areas, and angles, and the ability to apply geometric principles to solve problems.
Data Analysis: The ability to interpret and analyze data using charts, graphs, tables, and other statistical representations.
Algebra:Skills in manipulating algebraic expressions, solving equations and inequalities, and understanding functions and their properties.
Format and Scoring:
– The test consists of a variety of question types, including multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, drag-and-drop, and other technology-enhanced formats.
– It is divided into two parts, with a short break in between. The use of a calculator is permitted in the second part only.
– The test measures mathematical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and the ability to apply mathematics in real-world contexts rather than mere memorization of formulas.
Preparation and Study:
– Candidates are encouraged to study through GED-prep books, online resources, and educational programs that cover the range of mathematical concepts tested.
– Understanding and practicing with the type of questions and the calculator allowed on the test can significantly aid in preparation.
The GED Math test is designed to demonstrate that the test-taker has the mathematical skills and knowledge equivalent to those of a high school graduate. Passing the GED Math test, along with the other three subject tests (Reasoning Through Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies), is a significant step towards advancing one’s educational and career opportunities.
