What Subjects Are on the GED?
The GED is divided into four major subjects, each taken separately and designed to measure high-school level knowledge and skills.
1. Mathematical Reasoning
This test measures practical and academic math skills. You will see questions on:
- Basic arithmetic
- Fractions, decimals, and percentages
- Ratios and proportions
- Algebra (equations, expressions, graphing)
- Geometry (area, volume, angles)
- Data analysis and word problems
Format: Multiple choice, drag-and-drop, fill-in-the-blank, and calculator-allowed sections.
2. Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA)
This section tests reading and writing skills, including:
- Reading comprehension
- Identifying main ideas and evidence
- Grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure
- Writing an essay (extended response)
Format: Reading passages, editing tasks, grammar questions, and one essay.
3. Science
The science test focuses on real-world scientific knowledge and reasoning. Topics include:
- Life Science: cells, heredity, ecosystems, human body
- Physical Science: energy, motion, chemistry basics
- Earth & Space Science: weather, climate, geology, solar system
Format: Questions based on charts, graphs, experiments, and short readings.
4. Social Studies
This subject measures your understanding of major historical and civic topics:
- U.S. government and civics
- U.S. history (Revolution, Civil War, Civil Rights, etc.)
- Economics and financial literacy
- Geography and world history basics
Format: Reading charts, maps, historical documents, and data interpretation.
The GED covers four subjects: Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. You can take each one separately and only retake the tests you don’t pass.
